What do I need to bring?
- Your UK photocard driving license, valid for the whole rental.
- Your passport, in the same name.
- A credit card in the main driver's name with room for the deposit.
- Proof of your return flight: Budget says all renters from outside the US and Canada must show it.
Driving in the US as a UK visitor
- Americans drive on the right, and most rental cars are automatic.
- Speed limits are in miles per hour, as at home, but vary by state and road.
- At many junctions you can turn right on a red light after stopping, unless a sign says otherwise.
What catches visitors out?
- A debit card, or a card in someone else's name, for the deposit.
- Young driver fees if anyone driving is under 25.

Yes. A valid UK license with your passport is accepted by the major rental companies.
Do UK drivers need an International Driving Permit in the USA?
Not for the rental: UK licenses are in English, and Enterprise and Hertz only recommend an IDP for licenses in other languages.
Can I use a UK debit card to rent a car in the USA?
It's risky. Many locations won't take debit cards for the deposit, and those that do may run a credit check. Bring a credit card.
