Rental car before or after a cruise: where to pick up and drop off near every major port

The short answer

Most cruise terminals in the US and Canada have no rental counter. Below is the nearest counter we've confirmed for each major port, and the three traps that catch cruise passengers out.

Call 1-877-824-3680

Free call. We answer 24/7, every day of the year.

Or leave your number and we'll call you back.

The call is free. We call back 24/7, every day of the year. If anything we do costs money, you hear the price first and decide.

If this is you right now

Your ship sails on Sunday morning. You planned to drop the rental near the port first thing, and only now notice the branch is shut on Sundays and doesn't take keys after hours.

What are the three cruise-day traps?

  • No after-hours returns

Many city and hotel counters only take cars back while they're open. Drop the car the night before and it can stay on your rental until morning, or you miss the ship waiting for the desk to open.

  • Closed on Sunday, the day ships sail

Sunday is one of the busiest embarkation days, and it's the day many downtown and hotel branches close early or don't open at all. Check the Sunday hours of the exact branch before you plan a morning-of pickup or return.

  • Going to the wrong port

Long Beach and Los Angeles (San Pedro) are different ports. “New York” can be Manhattan, Brooklyn or Bayonne. Vancouver's Ballantyne Pier no longer takes cruise ships. Tampa has two Avis “Embassy Suites” branches ten miles apart. Your boarding pass is the source of truth.

Which port are you sailing from?

Ending a New England or Canada cruise here and driving back to the US? Cross-border one-way rentals can carry a big fee, and some companies don't allow them. Leave your number and we'll check it for your sailing.

Can I drive across the border after my cruise?

Alaska cruises often start or end in Vancouver, and New England and Canada cruises in Montréal. Driving a rental between the US and Canada is usually allowed, but dropping it off in the other country is a one-way cross-border rental. Some companies don't offer that at all, and the ones that do often add a large one-way fee. Ask before you book, not at the counter.

Questions people ask

Can I rent a car at the cruise terminal?

Usually not. Most cruise terminals in the US and Canada have no rental counter. The nearest counters are downtown, at a hotel or at the airport, and only some of them run a shuttle to the pier.

Can I return a rental car at the cruise port?

Rarely at the terminal itself. Some branches near the port run a shuttle to the pier after you drop the car off, and a few only serve cruise passengers. Check before you book.

What's the best place to pick up a rental car after a cruise?

Often the airport, because airport counters keep longer hours and have more cars. A downtown or hotel branch can be closer to the ship but may close early, especially on Sundays.

Why can't I return my rental car the night before my cruise?

Many city and hotel branches don't take after-hours returns. The car stays on your rental until the counter opens, which can be after you need to board.

Can I pick up a rental car in Vancouver and drop it in Seattle?

Some companies allow one-way rentals across the border and some don't. Those that do often charge a large one-way fee, so ask before you book.

Does the cruise line arrange rental cars?

Not usually. Cruise lines sell transfers to the airport or hotels. A rental car is booked separately, with the rental company or through us.
