Help with your Hertz rental

Independent help. OneCall Rental is not Hertz and is not part of Hertz. We can't see your Hertz account, but we can help you deal with them.

The short answer

Most Hertz problems come down to three things: the card you pay with, your age, and charges that turn up after the trip. Here's how Hertz handles each one, and where a real person can help when it goes wrong.

Paying with a debit card at Hertz

Hertz does accept debit cards, but the conditions catch people out at the counter:

  • Book at least 24 hours ahead, and be 25 or older.
  • At airports, bring proof of your return flight and two forms of ID.
  • Most locations run a credit check on debit card renters.
  • You're limited to compact through full-size cars.
  • Hertz can hold up to $500 on top of the rental cost, so make sure your account can cover both.

Renting from Hertz under 25

  • The minimum age is 20 at most US and Canadian locations, but 18 in New York, Michigan and Quebec.
  • Drivers under 25 pay a young renter fee of $19 a day.
  • Luxury and sports collections, like Dream Cars, Prestige and Adrenaline, aren't available to under-25s.

Cancelling a Hertz booking

  • Pay Later bookings: free to cancel before pickup.
  • Prepaid bookings: free within 24 hours of booking. After that it's $100, or $200 if you cancel within 24 hours of pickup. The fee never exceeds what you prepaid.
  • No-shows: if you don't cancel before pickup time, you may be charged a no-show fee.

That “Hertz Toll” charge on your statement

Hertz cars use PlatePass for electronic tolls. Drive through a toll lane and you pay the toll plus $9.99 to $13.99 for each day you used a toll road, depending on the state. These charges:

  • appear 1 to 3 weeks after your rental ends, sometimes later
  • show as “Hertz Toll” on your card statement
  • don't appear on your Hertz receipt

That's why so many people think they've been charged twice.

Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty: one family

Dollar and Thrifty are owned by Hertz. Policies often differ between the three, though, so a “no” at one counter isn't always a “no” across the family.

Questions people ask

Can I rent a Hertz car with a debit card at the airport?

Often yes, if you book 24 hours ahead, you're 25 or older, and you bring a return ticket and two forms of ID.

How much is the Hertz young driver fee?

$19 a day for renters under 25.

Why did Hertz charge me for tolls weeks later?

PlatePass toll charges post 1 to 3 weeks after the rental closes, plus a daily convenience fee for each day you used a toll road.

When it doesn't go to plan
