Charged after you returned the car?

A damage bill, a fuel fee, tolls that arrived weeks later. We know how rental companies bill and how these charges get challenged. Tell us what happened and one agent takes it from there.

Tell us about the charge

Don't sit on it

Charges like these come with deadlines, and they arrive sooner than most people expect. The earlier you tell us, the more we can do.

Which charge is it?

A charge after you've returned the car is nearly always one of these. Each one is handled differently.

  • Damage claims

The bill can include repairs plus extra items such as “loss of use”, meaning the days the car couldn't be rented out. Each part can be questioned on its own.

  • Tolls

These often arrive weeks later, with daily fees on top. Budget, for example, says e-Toll charges can take four to eight weeks to reach your card.

  • Fines and tickets

Parking and traffic fines are passed on to you with an admin fee added: Hertz up to $42 per notice, Avis up to $50 per violation. See tickets and camera fines.

  • An extra day you didn't expect

Returning even 30 minutes late, or dropping the car off after hours, can add charges. See charged an extra day for a late return.

  • Cleaning and smoking

These turn up days after return. See our page on cleaning and smoking fees.

  • Deposit still on your card

Sometimes it isn't a new charge at all but the deposit hold that hasn't dropped off yet. See deposit hold not released for how long each company says it takes.

  • What to do first

Don't pay or dispute anything until you know exactly what the charge is for. Ask for an itemised bill and the evidence behind it, and write down your dates: rental, return, and when the charge appeared. Card disputes have time limits.

How we handle it

  1. You tell us about the charge

Use the form below. A few minutes, and no card details.

  2. Your agent goes through it with you

One person explains what the charge is and tells you honestly whether it's worth challenging.

  3. We build your case and stay on it

We put it together, tell you exactly where it goes, and follow it with you until there's an answer.

Tell us about the charge

Answer what you can. As you go, the page tells you what your type of charge usually means and what your agent will do about it.

Do not type card numbers, security codes, PINs or passwords anywhere on this form. If a payment is ever needed, your agent arranges it with you directly.

What were you charged for?

A damage or repair bill

A damage bill is rarely one number. It is usually several charges stacked together: the repair itself, a charge for days the car was off the road, an admin fee, and sometimes more. Some of these stand up better than others.

What your agent does

Your agent goes through the bill line by line, checks it against your rental agreement, and tells you which parts are worth challenging.

Helpful to have

If the notice offers a discount for paying quickly, talk to us before you pay.

A fuel charge

Charged when the tank reads lower at return than at pickup. The price per gallon is usually well above the pump price, and a service fee can be added on top.

What your agent does

We check the charge against your agreement and what you have from the day you returned the car, then tell you whether it's worth challenging.

Helpful to have

A fuel receipt or a photo of the gauge from return day helps. Mention it below if you have one.

Tolls, tickets or camera fines

Rental cars are enrolled in a toll program. You pay the toll plus a daily fee from the rental company. Tickets and camera fines arrive with an admin fee added. These often post weeks after the trip.

What your agent does

We work out which part is the toll, which part is the rental company's own fee, and whether that fee was applied the way your agreement says.

Helpful to have

Tell us below if you used your own toll transponder as well.

A cleaning or smoking fee

A flat fee for sand, pet hair, spills or a smoke smell. Smoking fees are often several hundred dollars.

What your agent does

We look at what the company says it found, what your agreement allows, and what you can show about the car when you handed it back.

Helpful to have

Any photo of the interior from return day helps.

A late return or extra days

Returning after the grace period can add extra hours or a full extra day, sometimes at a higher rate than you booked.

What your agent does

We compare the time the company recorded with what you can show, and check the extra charge against the terms on your agreement.

Helpful to have

Anything with a time on it from when you handed the car back helps.

Add-ons I didn't agree to

A damage waiver, an upgrade, a fuel option or a toll pass added at the counter. These appear on the rental agreement you signed, often on a tablet.

What your agent does

We set your booking confirmation beside the agreement and the final receipt, find exactly where the price changed, and tell you whether it can be challenged.

Helpful to have

Have your booking confirmation and your final receipt to hand.

A deposit or hold that hasn't come back

A hold is not a charge. It should be released when the rental is closed, and your bank decides how quickly the money reappears. That is often several business days, and longer on a debit card.

What your agent does

We work out whether the delay sits with the rental company or with your bank, and tell you who to contact.

Helpful to have

Tell us the date you returned the car and the amount still held.

A prepaid booking I couldn't use or canceled

When you prepay through a travel site, the travel site usually holds your money and the rental counter can't refund it. Each side may send you to the other.

What your agent does

We work out who actually holds your money, what your booking terms really allow, and who you need to go to.

Helpful to have

Keep every chat, email and reference number. If you still need a car for this trip, tell us below and we'll help with that first.

Something else, or I'm not sure

That's fine. Many charges arrive with a label that explains nothing.

What your agent does

Your agent identifies the charge and explains it in plain words before anything else.

Helpful to have

The exact wording on your statement or in the company's email helps us identify it quickly.

How do we reach you?

We use your details only to handle this request. See our privacy policy.

How we protect you

  • We guard what mattersWe only take payment details once you've agreed, and we never keep them. We'll never ask for your card PIN or your banking passwords.
  • We are not the rental companyWe're independent, and we never say otherwise to you or to them.
  • It goes out in your nameWe prepare your case with you and tell you exactly where it goes. It's sent from your email, so you stay in control.
  • You hear the fee firstWe tell you the full fee before any paid work starts, and nothing is charged unless you say yes.

What we can't promise

Nobody can honestly promise that a charge will be reversed. The rental company and your card issuer make that decision. What we do is make sure your case is put properly, to the right people, in time. We aren't lawyers or insurance adjusters, and we don't deal with your insurer for you.

Questions people ask

The travel site and the rental company each say the other has my money

This is the most common problem with prepaid bookings, and it can go round in circles for weeks. We work out from your documents who actually holds your money, and tell you what to do next.

I already paid the charge. Is it too late?

Not necessarily. Paying doesn't stop you from challenging a charge. Timing does matter, so tell us now.

They've sent it to a collection agency

That can still be challenged, but the window is short. Send your details today and say so in the form.

I didn't take any photos

You can still challenge it. The rental company keeps its own records, and a claim it can't back up is a weaker claim. We know what to look for.
