Picking up a rental car someone else booked?

The short answer

Usually you can't, unless the person who booked comes too. The person named on the booking has to pick up the car and show their own license and a credit card in their own name. Avis says you can't rent a car for someone else, and Enterprise says you can't pay for someone else's rental. The fix is to book it in the driver's own name, or for the booker to come to the counter and add you as a driver.

Key takeaways

  • The person named on a rental booking normally has to pick up the car in person.
  • The credit card shown at the counter has to be in the renter's own name.
  • Avis says you can't rent a car for someone else; Enterprise says you can't pay for someone else's rental.
  • A spouse or partner can usually be added as a driver free: at Avis from age 25, at Enterprise if they meet the same rules, at Hertz with Gold Plus Rewards.

If this is you right now

Your daughter booked the car on her phone, on her account, with her card, so you'd have it waiting when you land. At the counter, the agent asks for the card used to book and the person named on the booking. She's 2,000 miles away, and the line behind you is getting longer.

Can I pick up a rental car booked in someone else's name?

Not on your own. Rental companies treat the person named on the booking as the renter, and the renter signs the agreement and is responsible for the car, whoever drives it. That's why they want that person at the counter with their own license and card.

CompanyWhat its own website says
AvisYou can't rent a car for someone else. The person who reserved the rental is the one who needs to pick it up. Other drivers can be added to the contract and have to sign a form.
EnterpriseYou can't pay for someone else's rental. The renter must be there to sign the agreement and show their credit card at pickup. If you booked online, the name on the card must match the name on the booking.
HertzEach additional driver must be at the rental location with a valid license. Additional drivers are charged per day, per person, apart from exceptions such as a spouse or partner for Gold Plus Rewards members.
Expedia bookingsWhen you collect the car, the driver must present a valid credit card in their own name.

Can my son or daughter pay for my rental car?

Not by paying for a booking in your name with their card. The card at the counter has to belong to the renter. What does work:

  • Book it in your name, paid with your card. They can still help you choose and book it, as long as the reservation and the card are yours.
  • Or they rent it and travel with you. They come to the counter, sign as the renter, and add you as an additional driver.
  • If you don't have a credit card, ask before you travel whether the location accepts a debit card and what it needs. See card declined at the counter.

I'm already at the counter. What can I do?

  • Don't cancel anything yet. Ask whether the booking can be rewritten in your name on your own card at the same rate.
  • If the booker is travelling with you, they can sign as the renter and add you as a driver.
  • If it was prepaid through a travel site, ask the counter to note on the booking why the rental was refused, before you leave. That note matters for any refund.
  • If the counter can't help, make a new booking in your own name first, then deal with the old one, so you're never left without a car.

Is my spouse or partner a free extra driver?

Often, yes, if they meet the same driver rules as the renter.

CompanySpouse or partnerOther additional drivers
AvisFree with a valid license, from age 25, meeting Avis's driver rulesMust sign a form; a fee may apply
EnterpriseFree if they meet the same age and license rules as the renter$15 a day per driver, unless other terms apply
HertzFree for Gold Plus Rewards members; added at pickupCharged per day, per person; free if the renter and driver are both AAA members

Some states and memberships change these rules. See memberships that add free drivers.

How do I book a rental car for my parents or family the right way?

  1. Put the main driver's name on the booking, exactly as it appears on their license.
  2. Pay with a credit card in that driver's name, with room for the deposit hold.
  3. Book it on their account or with their email, so the confirmation reaches them.
  4. Add other drivers at the counter, with each driver there in person with their license.
  5. Booking from abroad for family in the US? Check the country rules too. See booked from the wrong country.
